As a culmination to Women’s History Month the girls at Carver participated in a panel discussion hosted by Christal Jordan (@EnchantedPR) with Rolling Out Magazine. The panelists included Christy Rogers, executive director of ESI, Tracy Nicole, fashion designer, and Tamika Newhouse, author. The discussion was based on the question: “Are we still judging Black girls by their skin tone?” It opened with a look into rap lyrics that specifically target the skin tone of women as an object of affection or admiration. Also each of the panelist shared her individual story of how she came to realize that skin tone was a ‘thing’ in her life. The girls also got an opportunity to weigh in their thoughts on the topic and how it affects them.
